Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using these medications must be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Experts suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs describe a sudden return of appetite.
"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," described a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
