Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Threat: Technological Decline.

The recent US security policy document presents a misguided view of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an grave threat to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual danger facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, compared to a mere 13.5% growth for the European Union. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, about 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are American, while only four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap stems from superior productivity growth in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe starting at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile network for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find reasons for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for major reforms.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains significant strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
