Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There is no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
